Tribute to Abby Sobrato
The heart and soul of the Walden West Foundation, Abby Sobrato made her passion for Walden West evident to all who knew her. As foundation president for much of her 15-year involvement, Abby ignited the organization’s strength and ability to build a swimming pool, cabin and stately lodge at Walden West Science Center. Abby's vision of a state-of-the-art science lab and renovated center was underscored by her tireless efforts to fundraise for these projects. Not only did she and her husband John donate more than $1 million to the Walden West Science Center, but Abby also developed countless contacts with potential donors and carefully nurtured opportunities that came her way. She never missed a chance to meet with local business or community leaders, and initiated what is now a strong relationship with Santa Clara University. And whether attending a fundraiser for another cause or entertaining in her own home, Abby always kept Walden West in the back of her mind. Abby unceremoniously created her legacy by providing the Santa Clara County Office of Education a science center with the potential to be the finest in the state. Walden West and the Santa Clara County Office of Education were blessed to have had her support, inspiration and vision.
