Shelton named COE Chief Business Officer

SAN JOSE, CA – Donald Kenneth Shelton, assistant superintendent for Business Services at the Los Angeles County Office of Education, has been named Chief Business Officer of the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

In Los Angeles, Shelton has had a dual role: chief business and financial officer for the county office; and chief business official for the county superintendent, with services and statutory jurisdiction for 80 K-12 school districts, 13 community college districts, a number of joint powers agencies and numerous charter schools. He has held a position as a county office chief business official for over 15 years.

"We are incredibly fortunate to welcome someone of Ken Shelton's caliber to our office," said Dr. Charles Weis, Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools. "He is recognized throughout California as an expert without peer, a supportive colleague and a champion of public education."

Shelton is well-acquainted with the Bay Area, having worked from 2001-2003 as deputy superintendent for administrative services and chief business official for the Solano County Office of Education, as well as in an earlier position at a San Francisco e-commerce firm.

Shelton will assume leadership of the Santa Clara County Office's Business Services Branch on October 1. The branch is the office's financial and assets manager and the school districts' business support office. In addition to mandated services of school district budget review and pupil attendance accounting, the branch helps school districts to save money by providing such regionalized services as payroll processing, data compilation, and cooperative buying.

The branch is responsible for oversight of about $3.4 billion of taxpayer funds that support about 390 public schools in Santa Clara County.

"Our education community can look forward to fantastic customer service from Ken Shelton," Weis said. "He will be instrumental in our goal to make our services indispensable to schools and districts in the county."
