- Tobacco Free Certification Orientation
February 10, 2012 (3:00pm-5:00pm)
The Tobacco Free Certification Orientation will provide districts with information and resources to understand and complete the requirements to become certified as a Tobacco Free agency, as defined in California Health and Safety Code, Section 104420. Local Educational Agencies must
be certified as tobacco free in order to apply for Tobacco Use Prevention and Education (TUPE) competitive funds. - Academic Success through Coordinated School Health
March 12, 2012 (8:00am-4:00pm)
Coordinated School Health (CSH) is an effective system that is deliberate in connecting student health with educational success. The CSH approach improves students' health and their capacity to learn through the support of families, communities and schools working together. This training will focus on assisting schools and districts to better understand Coordinated School Health, consider implementation strategies, and receive technical and planning assistance.
Training of Trainers, "Moving Theory into Action: Educational Support Groups for Children Impacted by Substance Abuse"
May 7, 2012 (8:00am-4:00pm)
Substance abuse impacts student health, safety and academic success. This trainer of trainers professional development event will provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to implement and train others in effective group work strategies with students struggling with substance abuse issues. Participants will learn about substance abuse trends for adolescents in Santa Clara County, how to identify the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and how to structure and facilitate prevention and early intervention support groups. Discussions, role plays and vignettes will be utilized to ensure that participants become familiar with the policies and theories related to best practices in this area. The third day of training will be dedicated to reviewing the above, providing technical support as well as discussing strategies specific to participant needs.- Utilizing the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) for School Planning
Spring 2012 (half day)
This training will focus on supporting schools and districts to enhance their understanding of how to utilize the results of the CHKS for student and school planning matters. The facilitator will review the CHKS survey tool and lead participants through an analysis of their data and discuss next steps in moving from policy to practice. - Supporting Student Success: A Mental Health Approach
Dates TBD (3:00pm-5:00pm)
This series of two hour trainings will assist teachers, counselors, parents and others who work directly with children to better understand common mental health issues which impact student learning. Participants will gain basic skills and strategies to identify, intervene and support students in order to maximize their learning potential.
